An FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who had been a confidential source for the Federal Bureau of Investigation since 2010, was arrested on charges of lying to the FBI. Smirnov provided false derogatory information about President Biden and his son, Hunter, which was memorialized in an official FBI record that House Republicans have used in their investigation into the Biden family's business dealings. The FBI official cautioned that investigative reports only include leads and suspicions, not conclusions based on fuller context.
In response to the indictment of Smirnov, Rep. James Comer stated that the impeachment inquiry into Biden is not reliant on the FBI document and is based on a large record of evidence, including bank records and witness testimony. Hunter Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, emphasized that the allegations against the Bidens were built on lies told by individuals with political agendas, not facts.
Special Counsel David Weiss indicted Smirnov on charges of making false statements and creating a false record related to statements he made to the FBI. Smirnov allegedly provided false information about President Biden and Hunter Biden in 2020, after Biden became a presidential candidate. The Justice Department revealed that Smirnov's allegations were fabrications, and he had transformed routine business contacts with Burisma executives into bribery allegations against Biden.
Despite the charges against Smirnov, House Republicans have continued with their impeachment inquiry into Biden. The inquiry has expanded to include various allegations, but the Ukraine corruption allegation has been a significant focus. The Justice Department's investigation has debunked the Ukraine-Burisma conspiracy theory at the heart of the impeachment inquiry, according to Rep. Jamie Raskin.
The impeachment inquiry into Biden continues, with Republicans citing the FBI informant's claims as corroborating evidence. The Justice Department's charges against Smirnov have raised questions about the credibility of the information used in the impeachment inquiry and the motivations behind the allegations made against the Bidens.
